Background of the Study

Fuel subsidies are financial aids provided by governments to lower the cost of fuel, thereby making it more affordable for consumers and businesses. In many countries, including Nigeria, fuel subsidies have been used as a policy tool to control the price of fuel and mitigate the economic impact of rising fuel costs. However, the removal of fuel subsidies can lead to significant increases in fuel prices, which in turn affect logistics costs for businesses reliant on transportation.

Flour Mills of Nigeria, one of the largest producers of flour and other related products, operates a vast distribution network that spans across Nigeria. The company relies heavily on road transport for delivering products from its production facilities to customers. In Kebbi State, where infrastructure limitations exist, the removal of fuel subsidies has led to rising transportation costs, which in turn affect logistics and overall operational expenses. This study investigates how the removal of fuel subsidies has impacted logistics costs at Flour Mills of Nigeria, particularly in Kebbi State, and evaluates the potential long-term effects on the company’s supply chain and pricing strategies.

Statement of the Problem

The removal of fuel subsidies in Nigeria has led to increased fuel prices, thereby raising logistics costs for businesses across various industries. Flour Mills of Nigeria, with its extensive transportation network, has been directly affected by these changes. The company must adjust its logistics strategies to mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs. However, the specific effects of fuel subsidy removal on logistics costs at Flour Mills of Nigeria in Kebbi State have not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to evaluate these effects and provide insights into how the company can manage these challenges.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of fuel subsidy removal on logistics costs at Flour Mills of Nigeria in Kebbi State.

  2. To evaluate the effects of rising fuel costs on transportation efficiency and operational performance at Flour Mills of Nigeria.

  3. To examine strategies implemented by Flour Mills of Nigeria to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on logistics costs.

Research Questions

  1. How has the removal of fuel subsidies affected logistics costs at Flour Mills of Nigeria in Kebbi State?

  2. What impact has rising fuel prices had on the transportation efficiency of Flour Mills of Nigeria?

  3. What strategies has Flour Mills of Nigeria adopted to manage the increase in logistics costs following fuel subsidy removal?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The removal of fuel subsidies has significantly increased logistics costs at Flour Mills of Nigeria in Kebbi State.

  2. Rising fuel costs have negatively affected transportation efficiency at Flour Mills of Nigeria.

  3. Flour Mills of Nigeria has implemented strategies to mitigate the impact of increased logistics costs due to fuel subsidy removal.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on evaluating the impact of fuel subsidy removal on logistics costs at Flour Mills of Nigeria in Kebbi State. Data will be collected from financial records, transportation reports, and interviews with logistics managers. Limitations include potential challenges in isolating the effects of fuel price changes from other operational factors and limited access to detailed financial data.

Definitions of Terms
